My son brought his girlfriend on a family vacation, and I was astonished when I found out who she was.

LIFE STORIES

My son took his girlfriend on our summer family vacation. At least, I had always thought she was his partner, but then I found out who she really was, and it turned out to be one of the hardest discoveries of my life.

Being a working mother was never easy, but I was always proud of my ability to find a balance between career and family.
Sometimes I would come home only after dinner, when the lights in the rooms had long been turned off. Still, I always tried to make sure our family had everything necessary for a comfortable life.

My husband Mark also once had a stable job, but a few years ago he was laid off. Sometimes he worked on small projects to help with expenses, but the main financial responsibility fell on me. Honestly, I saw it as a natural way of supporting the family.

Lately, I noticed that our relationship was changing a bit. Because of work, I spent less time with Mark, and when I came home, he was already asleep. Sometimes it seemed like we were slowly drifting apart.

I hoped that our annual vacation would help us feel close again. The yearly holidays were a tradition in our family — no matter the circumstances, we always found a way to spend a few days together, away from daily worries. I treasured those moments because they created memories that last a lifetime.

This year, I especially wanted the vacation to go well. Mark had recently been going through difficulties due to the lack of a proper job, and I thought the trip would bring him some joy.

“We need this,” I told him after an especially exhausting day. “A few days away from everything, just the three of us.”

“But I don’t have a job and…” he began.

“No ‘but,’” I interrupted him. “I’ll take care of everything. Once you’ve had some rest, it will be easier to look for a job. Don’t worry, alright?”

“Alright,” he smiled. “Thank you for arranging everything for us. I’m sure Eric will also be happy about the trip.”

Our son Eric is twenty years old and studies at university. Like most of his peers, he lives his own life — parties, friends, social media. But when I called him and told him about our plans, he was genuinely happy.

“Yes, Mom, I agree!” he exclaimed. “I can’t wait to spend time with you.”

I was pleased with his enthusiasm.

The next day, he called with a request:

“Mom, can I bring my girlfriend with me?”

Girlfriend? I was a little confused.

“Uh… I think so,” I replied uncertainly. “What’s her name?”

“Jessica,” he said. “A great girl. You’ll like her.”

I didn’t know what to think. Our vacations had always been just the three of us, and now introducing a new person I had never met seemed strange. But Eric was so happy that I didn’t want to spoil his mood.

He said they had been dating for three months.

“Alright,” I agreed. “We’ll host her.”

I fully focused on preparing for the trip, wanting everything to be perfect. I didn’t suspect that this vacation wouldn’t just be about rest and bringing the family closer together, but would also become a test for all of us.

When we met Jessica at the airport, she looked like she had stepped off the cover of a magazine — stylish clothes, neatly arranged hair, and a radiant smile. Mark helped carry her suitcase and complimented her choice of shoes. I took it as politeness — after all, she was my son’s girlfriend. Why worry?

At first, Jessica seemed nice and friendly, but soon I began to notice strange things.

On the first evening at dinner, I tried to talk to her to get to know her better.

“Jessica, have you ever seen Eric play basketball?” I asked.

Her eyes widened, and she hesitated before answering:

“Basketball? We’ve never talked about that.”

I raised my eyebrows. Eric had been passionate about basketball for years; his social media was full of team photos and game updates. How could his “girlfriend” not know that? I looked at Eric, but he was absorbed in his phone.

The next day, Eric suggested a ride on a jet ski. His face lit up with joy, but Jessica frowned:

“I’m not really into water sports.

Strange… Eric had never mentioned this before?

Later, while relaxing by the pool, I overheard Jessica speaking to Eric:

“Biology, right?” she laughed. “I can’t believe I keep forgetting!”

My heart skipped a beat. What was going on?

Halfway through the vacation, I accidentally came across a small velvet box in Eric’s suitcase. I opened it and saw a beautiful diamond necklace. It looked very expensive, and I couldn’t believe a student could afford it.

Suddenly, Eric’s phone, which was lying on the table, lit up with a notification. I glanced at the screen and froze:

It was a short message from Mark thanking him for his help, mentioning a small payment for supporting him in keeping a secret.

I felt my heart tighten, and I began to piece the puzzle together. I entered Eric’s password to see the details.

The conversation revealed that Jessica was not Eric’s girlfriend at all. She was someone close to Mark. Eric was helping his father to keep the secret, and in return, he received a small payment. And the necklace? Mark had bought it with my money.

I was in shock. But I knew it was important to stay calm.

That same evening, I invited everyone to the hotel restaurant. I carefully chose my outfit — a beautiful dress and… the necklace Mark had bought for Jessica.

When I walked in, all eyes turned to me. Jessica smiled, but her smile faded when she saw the necklace.

“Mom, why are you wearing Jessica’s necklace?” Eric asked.

“Funny, because your father bought it with my money,” I replied calmly.

Mark turned pale.

“I didn’t know…” he began.

“From now on, I want us to speak honestly,” I continued gently but firmly. “Every relationship and trust is built on openness. Hiding the truth always hurts more.”

Eric tried to explain something, but I understood that everyone needed time to reflect on their actions.

The next day, I returned home alone. I needed time to regain my inner balance and understand how to live from now on.

I don’t know what awaits us in the future, but one thing is certain: trust and honesty are the foundation of every family.
