I couldn’t hold back my tears as I said goodbye to my companion, who was more than just a dog.

LIFE STORIES

There have been many difficult moments in my life when I didn’t show any emotion — whether during tough professional experiences, personal losses, or disappointments. But as I sat with Rex, my loyal companion, his head resting on my lap, the tears began to flow on their own.

His breathing was growing weaker. The vet said his condition had worsened and continuing treatment would be cruel. But how do you say goodbye to someone who’s been by your side for so many years?

Rex wasn’t just an ordinary dog — he was a true hero. He saved lives, helped catch criminals, and took part in many important operations. His loyalty and courage always got me through the toughest times. And now, as the moment to say goodbye came, I had to find the strength within myself.

That morning, I made the difficult decision. Rex was still breathing, but I knew our time together was coming to an end. Alongside Millie, a colleague who was also going through her own loss, we spent Rex’s final moments together. “Thank you, Rex,” I said through tears. “Thank you for everything.”

Rex wasn’t just a service dog — he became a symbol of loyalty and bravery. He took part in risky missions, saved lives, and his contribution to our work was immeasurable. When I received words of thanks from colleagues and from people whose lives Rex had saved, I realized just how great an impact he had made.

Losing Rex was painful. The house felt empty without him, and every corner reminded me of him. His memory, his belongings — like his ashes and leash — became symbols of the lessons he taught me. One day, while walking along our favorite trail, I decided I would share his story with others, to pass on the wisdom he had given me.

Today, I work with young people, sharing Rex’s story and the life lessons he embodied. Loss is always difficult — it’s important to feel it, but also to use it as a way to help others. Rex’s story continues to inspire and stands as a powerful example of courage and loyalty.

Each of us can honor the memory of those we’ve lost by passing on their lessons and helping others. That is the best way to keep them alive in our hearts.
