LIFE STORIES

He left his daughter with his mother “for three weeks” — but he only returned after 10 years. What happened to him then changed everything…

When Nicolas said he would leave Paula with his mother for a few weeks, he sounded sincere. He explained that he urgently had to take care of some matters and promised he would return soon. He even kissed his daughter goodbye and left her favorite toy so she wouldn’t miss him.

“Will you come back for my birthday?” Paula asked hopefully.

“Of course, sweetheart. I promise.”

But he didn’t return after three weeks, nor after three months. Time passed — and the father was still not there.

Doris Duran didn’t ask unnecessary questions. She had once raised a child alone — working beyond her limits, denying herself everything to secure her son’s future. Now, at the end of her life, she was to become a rock again — this time for her granddaughter.

At first, it was hard. Paula often cried at night, holding the phone in her hand, hoping for a call from her dad. She didn’t understand why he disappeared. But Doris was there for her. She stroked her hair, read her fairy tales, attended school performances, and stayed by her bedside when the girl had a fever.

Years passed. Doris sacrificed a lot — rest, health, peace. But she never regretted her choice. Because Paula was becoming stronger, wiser, and more sensitive. She grew up grateful, hardworking, and caring. And this was the credit of only one woman.

When Paula turned 18, she got into university. On her own. Without her father’s help. After earning her diploma, she found a good job and soon met a man who became for her what her father never could be — a protector and partner. They got married, bought a house, and Doris moved in with them, surrounded by love and care.

And one day, after ten years, an old car stopped in front of the house where Paula lived. A man in a wrinkled coat and with a dull look got out. He stood by the gate for a long time, as if unsure whether he should enter. It was Nicolas.

When he was let in, an adult, confident woman was already waiting for him in the hallway. Paula. She remained calm — without anger, but also without warmth.

“Dad?.. What are you doing here?”

“I… missed you. I thought a lot. I want to fix everything. Start over.”

There was a moment of silence.

“Forgive me,” Paula said, handing him an envelope and a bunch of keys. “We’ve already forgiven you. But starting over isn’t possible. We simply went too far.”

Nicolas took the envelope hesitantly. Inside were money — not as help, but as a farewell. And keys — to their old house.

He turned and left without a word.

And Paula returned to the kitchen where her grandmother was baking apple pie. As if nothing had happened, she sat beside her, took another rolling pin, and began rolling the dough.

Did he leave?” Doris asked calmly.

“Yes,” her granddaughter replied just as calmly. “Forever.”

“Then pour me some tea, it’ll be ready soon.”

Sometimes in life there are actions that cannot be undone. Words that went unspoken for too long. Promises that remained empty.

But this story is not about revenge. It is a story about a family that survived. About a grandmother who became a true mother. And about a girl who grew into a strong woman not despite, but because of the love she received.

True family — is not always those who gave you life. It’s those who stayed when others left.
