Diagnosed at 22, Juanita fought her illness with extraordinary courage and a spirit that inspired everyone around her. Despite the difficulties, Juanita firmly believed that positive thinking could overcome fear, no matter the circumstances. In a moving farewell shortly before her death, she said, “For me, hope is synonymous with peace.” Her unwavering belief that we can choose how we respond to life’s challenges brought her comfort and strength, even in the darkest moments of her battle.

Juanita came from a family with a long history of public service; her father was the mayor of Lo Barnechea, Chile.

Her death plunged the community she belonged to into deep mourning. However, her loved ones find comfort in the belief that she has found eternal peace. Her legacy remains etched in the hearts of those she touched through her courage and determination.

The news of Juanita’s breast cancer diagnosis derailed her plans to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain, an exciting new chapter in her life. Nevertheless, she faced this unexpected setback head-on. After surgery and radiation therapy, Juanita fully dedicated herself to fighting her illness and hoping for recovery. Despite her battle with cancer, she managed to complete her studies and found love, eventually getting married.

These successes gave her a sense of progress and briefly instilled hope for healing. Unfortunately, a biopsy performed in 2017 revealed devastating news: the cancer had returned and spread to her sternum, lymph nodes, and lungs. Her story powerfully reminds us that optimism can help us overcome the greatest challenges and that each of us has the strength to persevere and make a lasting difference. Let us remember Juanita as a beacon of hope and strength, whose life continues to inspire people to face their difficulties with courage and positivity.
