I fly often, and every time I face the same problem: my weight is above average, and I physically can’t fit into a standard seat without encroaching on the space of the person next to me.
So I made the decision in advance to buy two tickets — one by the window and the adjacent seat — so that I wouldn’t cause discomfort to anyone.
I sat down, buckled my seatbelt, when suddenly a woman with a small child approached me. Without asking, she sat her child in the empty seat next to me. 😲😲
I calmly explained that this seat was also mine, that I had paid for it, and that I needed it for personal reasons.
But the woman started loudly complaining.
— “Seriously? You won’t give up a seat for a child?!”
Some “kind” passengers immediately joined in:
— “But it’s a child!”
I could feel everyone staring at me in judgment. But I knew I was right. And that’s when I did something that ended this drama once and for all.

I calmly pressed the call button for the flight attendant and explained the situation. I showed both of my boarding passes and added:
“Either you find other seats for this passenger, or I request that the captain be called and an official report be filed for interference with paid seating. This is a violation of transportation regulations.

It all happened quickly. The flight attendant called the senior crew member. After a brief conversation with the captain, the woman and her child were removed from the plane. As it turned out, this wasn’t the first time she had pulled a stunt like this — she had just been lucky before.
As the plane prepared for takeoff, things finally quieted down around me. A few people even apologized — though most just looked away.

P.S. I bought two seats because I respect myself and others — not to “give them up” to people who are used to getting their way by being pushy.
