I had been married to him for seven years. On our wedding day, I believed that our relationship would be as solid as a rock and that he would become my support for life. However, reality turned out to be different. Over time, I began to notice changes. He started staying at work longer, the phone that had previously been open to me suddenly became locked, and his “best friend” — the one he claimed he only had a friendly relationship with — appeared more and more often. And that woman was my own best friend from college.
Everyone around considered her smart, charming, and charismatic; even I once thought so. But in my heart, I had no doubt: something between them was wrong. A woman’s instinct does not lie — I felt a discomfort that could not be ignored. I tried talking to my husband, expressing my suspicions, asking directly what was going on, but he only got annoyed and avoided conversation.
One day, he announced that he needed to extend a two-week business trip to a remote island. I suspected nothing and only wished him good health. However, the next morning, I accidentally saw a message on his phone — and my heart stopped. The business trip was just a cover. In reality, he and my friend had long planned to spend that time together, and everything seemed carefully planned.
I was shocked and devastated, but instead of making a scene, I decided to remain silent. I wanted to understand how far he would go in his lies when he returned home. Those fifteen days seemed endless. During the day, I tried to be strong for our daughter — she was too young to understand the full pain of the adult world. At night, my heart ached. Several times she asked, “Mom, why has dad been on the business trip for so long?” — and each time I hid my tears so as not to upset her little heart.
When he returned, he was smiling and caring, holding gifts in his hands, trying to look attentive: “I missed you so much.” I remained silent. Sitting beside him, I looked him straight in the eyes and quietly, but firmly, asked:
“—Do you know what problems she is struggling with?”
These words surprised him. He turned pale, and confusion appeared in his eyes.
“—What… what are you talking about?” — he barely managed to say.
I pressed my lips together, holding back tears, and observed his reaction. I knew what he couldn’t even suspect: my friend was hiding a serious illness. She was undergoing treatment and keeping everything secret, while simultaneously building new relationships. My husband, without thinking about her problems, easily succumbed to her attention.
“I’m asking for the last time: did you know?” — my voice was calm, but firm.
He remained silent. In his eyes, one could see confusion, guilt, and the realization of his mistake. I was already ready to part ways, understanding that our family could not be saved.
