This morning I lifted the lid and froze — at first I thought it was just an ordinary object, until I realized it was moving.

TRICKS

That morning began like any other. I woke up with a slight feeling of tiredness after a sleepless night, barely managing to convince myself to get out of bed. In my mind, I was already planning the day — breakfast, getting the kids ready, house chores. Everything seemed familiar, calm, and routine. Even the soft light filtering through the curtains promised an ordinary morning.

However, as soon as I walked into the bathroom, something made me slow down. I didn’t immediately understand what it was — perhaps a faint sense of unease that sometimes visits me in the mornings. I approached the toilet and lifted the lid… and froze. At the bottom of the bowl lay something dark, motionless, as if the night itself had crept into my bathroom.

At first, I tried to rationalize what I was seeing. “Probably a bottle cap or one of the kids’ toys,” I thought. I even smiled slightly, trying to dismiss the growing unease. But then the object moved.

The world seemed to stop for a few seconds. My breath caught in my chest, my heart began to race. The movement was slow, fluid, almost majestic — as if someone were gently stirring the water from within. And suddenly it hit me like a cold wave: it wasn’t an object at all.

When the surface of the water trembled, I saw the glint of dark, smooth scales shimmering in the light. At that moment, I realized — there was a snake in our toilet.

I couldn’t move. My heart was pounding as if it wanted to jump out, my breathing became shallow and uneven. My hands were shaking, my legs barely holding me up. With all my strength, I closed the lid and, without thinking, grabbed the children. We ran outside, leaving the bathroom door wide open, and only then allowed myself a few deep breaths.

I tried to understand how this could have happened. How did a snake end up in our house? In our seemingly safe and cozy home? We don’t live in the countryside but in a modern city, among apartment blocks, houses, and dense infrastructure. It seemed impossible.

After a few minutes, I called the emergency services. The specialists arrived quickly, calm and confident. When they carefully lifted the lid, the snake was still there, coiled tightly. Its body gleamed in the water, and its eyes stared straight at me, as if it understood that its presence was causing fear.

One of the specialists explained that such cases happen more often than one might think. During warm seasons, reptiles sometimes enter through sewer pipes, attracted by the coolness and water. To us, it sounded almost like fantasy, but the men’s professionalism reassured me: everything is fine, there’s no danger, and the snake will be safely removed.

I stood in the doorway, watching the whole process, feeling a strange mix of fear and awe. The house, which had always seemed safe, suddenly proved to be far less predictable than I had thought. I realized how little we know about what might be lurking around us, even in the most ordinary places.

After this incident, I started paying more attention to every detail in the house. I check the pipes, watch the children, remind myself of the need for caution. Every time I enter the bathroom, I can’t help but glance at the toilet — to make sure nothing is moving there anymore.

This story became an important lesson for me. Sometimes the most ordinary moments — morning washing, breakfast, or getting the children ready for school — can turn into situations that require calm, attention, and common sense. I understood that fear can be overcome if you act wisely, and professional help is never unnecessary.

Today, looking back, I even smile. This event, although frightening, taught me to appreciate the safety of my home, care for loved ones, and pay attention to the world around me. And even though the snake never appeared again, I know: sometimes the most ordinary things can hide unexpected surprises, and caution and common sense are the best friends in everyday life.
