The king placed a veil over his daughter’s face so that no one in the entire kingdom would see her from the moment of her birth until her wedding day. From that moment on, the princess’s face became a secret that was never to be spoken of aloud, and everyone at court understood that there were things one must never approach.
When Princess Elina turned six, the king finally sealed his decision. He ordered that the veil must always cover her face and personally made sure of it. Every time she appeared before others, he would approach her and gently cover her face with the veil, as if cutting her off from other people’s eyes and from the entire world.
From then on, no one in the kingdom saw her face from the day she was born. It was no longer merely a rule — it became part of palace life, part of the silence and fear that grew alongside her.
Rumors began to spread throughout the palace. Some spoke of a curse. Others claimed the king had once seen something so terrifying that he decided to hide his daughter from the world forever. But the truth remained unknown, because her face was always hidden beneath the veil, and the king kept covering it again and again, never allowing anyone to come close to the secret.
The princess grew up in complete isolation. She barely spoke, avoided people, and always remained within the shadows of the palace. Her only escape came at night, when she stayed alone and quietly played an old piano in an empty hall. In those moments, it seemed that music was the only thing still connecting her to the world.
As the years passed, the fear surrounding her only grew stronger. The servants avoided her gaze. A few brave souls tried to uncover the truth: one courtier secretly attempted to remove her veil, but he was banished from the kingdom; a young maid once tried to lift the fabric while the princess slept beside the fireplace, yet she disappeared the very next day. After that, no one dared come near her again.
The king always repeated the same words:
— She will remove the veil only on her wedding day.
But the years passed, and no suitors came forward. No one wished to marry a girl whose face had never been seen since birth.

The king was growing old. His gaze became heavier with time, and the silence within the palace grew deeper. He understood that one day he would be gone, and his daughter would remain alone in a world that feared her.
Then a young prince named Richard arrived in the kingdom. He was not the wealthiest heir, but there was no fear in his eyes. When he announced that he wished to marry the princess without ever having seen her face since birth, the entire palace fell silent.
People could not believe it:
— He is doing it for power.
— Or out of curiosity.
— Or he does not understand what awaits him.
Nevertheless, the wedding was arranged.
On the day of the ceremony, the cathedral was full. People even stood along the walls, waiting for the moment they had heard about their entire lives.
When the doors opened, absolute silence filled the hall.
The king led his daughter toward the altar. She wore a white gown, and her face, as always since birth, was hidden beneath the veil, which the king once again gently adjusted before all the guests.
Prince Richard stood at the altar, and for the first time in his life, he did not know what he was about to see.
The priest began the ceremony with a trembling voice.
And then the moment of truth arrived.
The king slowly stepped closer.

The entire hall fell silent.
He gently lifted the veil.
And removed it from her face.
A second of silence stretched into eternity.
The entire cathedral stood frozen.
Under the veil there was no ugliness, no scars, nothing frightening.
There stood a girl of extraordinary beauty, so powerful that people could not believe their eyes. But her gaze was empty and cold — as if years of isolation had taken everything alive from her.
The king fell to his knees.
— Why did you do it? — the advisor asked quietly.
He replied:
— Because the beauty of her mother destroyed kingdoms. People went to war, betrayed each other, lost their minds. I feared that history would repeat itself.
And then the princess spoke for the first time in her life.
— You thought you were protecting me… but in reality you covered my face with a veil from birth and, with it, my entire life.
She turned and slowly walked toward the exit.
And no one dared to stop her.
It is said she disappeared from the kingdom that same day. But her story remained in legends.
