For several weeks, the entire kingdom had been talking about only one horse.
The king bought her from a famous horse breeder from a distant land. It was a huge black stallion of an extremely rare breed. An immense fortune had been paid for him, and all the courtiers were certain that the king would now have the most magnificent horse in the entire kingdom.
But everything turned out completely differently. From the very first day, the stallion refused to accept his new master.
Whenever the king approached him, the horse would immediately pin his ears back, neigh loudly, rear up, and pound his hooves against the ground. Several times, he nearly knocked even the most experienced grooms off their feet, and once he kicked the wooden stable gate so hard that it split in half.
The more people tried to break him by force, the more furious the stallion became.
Several weeks passed.
The horse almost stopped eating, slept poorly, was constantly nervous, and allowed no one near him. Even the most experienced grooms began to fear entering his stall.
One morning, one of the warriors decided to put a heavy chain bridle on the stallion.
The horse suddenly reared up and struck him with its hoof. The man lay unconscious for several days. After that incident, the entire palace was filled with anxiety.
Some advised the king to sell the stallion to another ruler. Others demanded that they get rid of him, believing such an animal was far too dangerous.
The king himself was already beginning to regret his purchase. It was then that he noticed a young girl named Mary.
She was the daughter of a poor farmer and had only recently started working at the palace as an assistant in the stables. While everyone else tried to stay away from the stallion, the girl quietly came to his stall every day and watched him silently for long periods of time.
One day, the king saw her standing beside the horse.
“Why are you standing here? Aren’t you afraid?”
The girl calmly looked at him.
“I’m not the one who should be afraid. He is.”
The king frowned.
“What do you mean by that?”
“This horse isn’t angry because he’s wild. He simply doesn’t trust anyone anymore.”
The courtiers exchanged glances.
No one had ever dared to speak to the king so directly.
He took several steps toward the girl.
“So, in your opinion, none of my best men understand anything?”
“They are trying to make her afraid. But fear never creates trust.”
The king smirked.
“Very well. If you’re so wise, try it yourself.”
The girl remained silent. The king continued:
“If you can tame this stallion, I will grant you any wish you desire.”
“Any wish?”
“Any.”

“Then I want to become your wife.”
Complete silence fell over the courtyard.
A second later, loud laughter erupted. The courtiers, guards, and grooms could not believe their ears.
The king laughed as well.
“You are far too bold for a simple girl.”
“Perhaps.”
“Very well. If tomorrow this stallion willingly submits to you, I will keep my word.”

The king watched what was happening with a satisfied smile.
Mary slowly walked inside. She had neither a whip, nor ropes, nor a weapon. The stallion immediately charged toward her.
The crowd cried out in fear. But the girl did not take a single step backward.
When only a few meters remained between them, the horse suddenly stopped.
The courtyard became so quiet that only its heavy breathing could be heard.
Mary slowly raised her hand and began speaking softly to the stallion.

The horse gradually stopped pinning its ears back. Then it cautiously took a step forward and lowered its head on its own.
The girl slowly stroked its neck.

Mary was silent for a moment.
— When I approached his stall yesterday, I saw blood near his mane.

The girl carefully moved the stallion’s long mane aside.
Everyone saw an old, deep wound behind his ear, hidden beneath his thick hair. It had remained unnoticed for a long time beneath an expensive ornament and was constantly being rubbed by the heavy bridle.

Very soon, the stallion became calm and obedient and began trusting people again.

— You didn’t just save this horse, — he said quietly. — You saved me from the greatest mistake of my life. I wanted to punish an animal that was only trying to show that it was in pain.
The girl smiled.

The king remained silent for a long time.
