Anna had worked at the morgue for almost three years.
During that time, she had become accustomed to things she once believed a person should never get used to: the cold air, the dim lighting, the silence that sometimes seemed heavier than any noise, and the motionless faces of people whose stories had already come to an end.
During the first few months, she often returned home completely exhausted. She found it difficult to eat after her shifts, slept badly, and several times woke up during the night, remembering the people she had seen at work.
Over time, however, everything changed.
Anna learned to separate work from her personal life. She stopped thinking of every person as someone’s father, husband, son, or brother. And perhaps that gradual indifference was the first step toward what happened later.
Her salary was small. It was barely enough to pay for a rented room, food, and the necessities.
But Anna wanted more.
She dreamed of owning her own apartment, traveling, and having the beautiful life she saw on social media. She wanted to wake up one day knowing that she no longer had to count her money until the next paycheck.
However, it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to fulfill those dreams through honest work.
And then Anna began doing something no one was supposed to find out about.
She began taking things that belonged to the dead.
At first, they were small items. A cheap watch, a small chain, a wallet containing a few banknotes.
Later, she became bolder.
She noticed that the relatives of the deceased were often so emotionally overwhelmed that they could not immediately remember every item the person had been carrying. Someone was crying, someone was in shock, while someone else simply wanted to finish all the formalities as quickly as possible.
Anna convinced herself that no one would notice anything.
And so, little by little, something that had initially seemed horrifying to her became a habit.
She no longer felt the guilt she once had.
Until one day, a man around thirty-five years old was brought into the morgue.
The cause of death was listed as sudden cardiac arrest.
He was far too young for such an ending.
He was wearing elegant, expensive clothes. Everything suggested that he had lived a comfortable life.
But something else caught Anna’s attention.
On the man’s ring finger was a gold ring.
Massive, heavy, and without unnecessary decorations. It looked extremely expensive and definitely did not resemble ordinary, cheap jewelry.
Anna stared at the ring for several seconds.
“A ring like that must be worth a fortune,” she thought.
She tried to push the thought out of her mind.
But a moment later, the thought returned.

She knew that in the evenings, there was almost no one in that part of the morgue. The cameras had not been working for a long time because of damaged wiring, and their repair kept being postponed.
When the doctor on duty left and another employee wheeled the cart into the adjacent room, Anna was alone.
She looked at the door.
Then back at the man.
She felt uneasy, even with herself.
But the desire to get the ring proved stronger.
Anna walked over to the cart and stopped beside it.
The man’s face looked completely peaceful. He seemed like someone who had simply fallen asleep after a long day.
Anna reached out her hand.
Her fingers touched the man’s hand.
And then she froze.
His hand was warm.
Anna immediately pulled her hand back.
For several seconds, she stared at the man, trying to convince herself that she had only imagined it.
“That’s impossible.”
She had seen enough dead people to know what happens to the body after death.
But this time, it was different.
Anna carefully touched his hand again.
The warmth was still there.
Anna’s heart began beating faster.
She was no longer thinking about the ring.
Carefully, she placed her fingers against the man’s wrist.
At first, nothing.
And then…
The slightest movement.
Anna froze.
She checked again.
And felt a weak, almost imperceptible pulse.
Anna went pale.
The man was alive.
She stepped back and for several seconds was simply unable to move.
In front of her lay a man who had already been pronounced dead.
If she had not tried to remove the ring, the man might have remained in the morgue until the next medical procedures began.
And by then, the consequences could have been irreversible.
For the first time in a very long time, Anna felt genuine fear.

But this time, she wasn’t afraid that someone would discover her theft.
She was afraid that it might already be too late.
She ran out of the room and began calling for the doctor.
Within minutes, the morgue was in chaos.
The man was examined immediately, and signs of life were detected.
Later, doctors suspected that he had experienced an extremely rare condition in which the heart and breathing become so weak that a person can mistakenly be pronounced dead.
His life was saved.
Anna remained shaken for a long time.
She sat alone after her shift ended and stared at her hands.
And for the first time in several years of working at the morgue, she wasn’t thinking about how much money she could make or what item she could take.
She was thinking about how thin the line between life and death can sometimes be.
And about the terrible irony of the entire situation.
She had approached this man because of greed.
She intended to steal his ring.
That was precisely why she touched his hand and discovered something no one else had noticed before.
Her actions did not make the theft right.
But that evening, something happened that Anna could never have predicted.
The man she had intended to rob was alive.
And perhaps, for the first time in a very long time, Anna understood one simple thing: sometimes even the most wrongful act can unexpectedly lead a person to a moment that changes their life forever.
After that incident, she never looked at her work the same way again.
Because now, behind every motionless face, she once again saw a human being.
A person with a family, memories, fears, dreams, and loved ones who might still be waiting for them to come home.
And the expensive gold ring remained on the man’s finger.
