Only two days remained until the wedding, and I was living in anticipation. Robert was everything to me: intelligent, caring, kind, he always knew how to lift my spirits. We were preparing for our new life, discussing every detail of the ceremony. Everything seemed almost like a fairy tale — until one evening, when he suddenly said, “Katherine, I have to urgently go on a business trip.”
I didn’t immediately understand what was happening. “How come? Our wedding is this Saturday,” was all I could reply. Robert assured me that everything was under control, that he would return on time, maybe even a day before the ceremony. He said he was going with Travis, his boss, and that it was a very important work matter. I tried to stay calm, but something tightened inside me. Everything felt too strange.
A few hours after he left, Travis himself called me. He apologized that he wouldn’t be able to attend our wedding because he was also going on a business trip, and wanted to deliver a gift from himself and Robert. I asked, “But isn’t Robert with you?” There was silence on the other end. “No, I didn’t send Robert anywhere,” he replied calmly.

Without a word, I hung up, grabbed my purse, wallet, and coat, and went to the airport. I managed to buy a ticket for the same flight Robert was supposed to take — he had accidentally left the tickets on the nightstand. At the airport, I saw him near the boarding gate. He looked calm, focused on his phone. I kept my distance, sat in a different row, and my entire being was tense like a string.
Upon arrival, I followed him. He took a taxi — I did the same and asked the driver to follow that car at an appropriate distance. After a few minutes, we stopped in front of a small single-family house in a quiet neighborhood. I got out a bit further and hid behind a tree. Robert approached the door, stood for a moment, and knocked. After a few seconds, he was let inside.
I came closer and looked through the window. Inside, he was sitting next to an unfamiliar woman. He hugged her — just like he used to hug me. I felt my heart tighten and my eyes fill with tears. I didn’t know what to think about it. It was all beyond belief.

When he left and drove away, I gathered my courage and approached the door. The woman opened it and, seeing my tear-streaked face, gently asked if everything was alright. I struggled to say, “I’m Robert’s fiancée. Our wedding is in two days.” She clearly got embarrassed but invited me inside.
We sat in the kitchen. She introduced herself — Liz, Robert’s first love. And immediately added, “I know how it looks. But he didn’t come to me as a lover. He came to say goodbye to the past.” According to her, their relationship in youth was toxic. He hurt her and lived with that burden for many years. He couldn’t start a new life without closing that chapter. She also said that now she is happily married, has two children, and there was and can be nothing between her and Robert. “He spoke of you with such love. He wants to be with you. You are his present,” she said.

I stayed at her place until dawn and returned home as it was getting light. Robert was already waiting for me by the door, nervous and worried. He immediately hugged me: “Where have you been? I was worried. I will explain everything to you…” I looked at him and said, “I know everything. I was at Liz’s.”
He sighed and lowered his gaze. “I should have told you. I had to do it to be completely honest with you. I love only you.” I nodded. I didn’t need any more explanations. Everything fell into place.
This story could have ended differently. But it ended with understanding. I realized that sometimes a person can lie not because they want to betray, but because they are afraid of losing what is most important to them. And that is not an excuse — but it is an explanation. We talked, forgave each other, and all that remained — was the love with which we began our journey together.
