LIFE STORIES

For five Christmases, they forgot me. On the sixth, I bought a house in the mountains for 1.2 million — and I decided: I wouldn’t wait any longer.

All my life, I had remembered other people’s birthdays, sent gifts, written greetings — but I was erased from the list… I was always invited last, if at all.

Always “busy,” “too far,” “not convenient to come.” But now, I had my own home — glass, stone, and silence, where you can breathe. Five acres of peace — for 1.2 million. My territory.

Two weeks after moving in, the security system triggered an alert. On the screen — three cars, ten people. My daughter was the first to come out, took a key, and without knocking, opened the door.

— Surprise, Mom! We decided to spend Christmas together!

I stood by the fireplace, in a burgundy dress and pearls. On the table — three place settings. Next to me, Marcus, the lawyer, and Officer James.

— How touching, — I said. — Only strange that no one asked if I wanted guests.

I pressed the remote. The screen lit up: a video of my daughter and son-in-law walking around the house, discussing where to put the tree and “which room would suit the kids.”

They went pale. The camera was blinking red.

— This is an illegal intrusion, — the officer said calmly.
Marcus handed them papers. — From today — by invitation only.

I paused and looked at the screen.

— Do you want me to show the second recording?

They froze.

I pressed “Play”…

Pendant cinq Noëls, ils m’ont oubliée. Au sixième, j’ai acheté une maison dans les montagnes pour 1,2 million — et j’ai décidé : je n’attendrai plus

The screen flickered — and in the living room, familiar voices echoed. On the video, my son was in a real estate office. He was smiling. He spoke confidently:
— My mother has trouble walking, I am her son. A spare key is needed, in case she falls.

Next to him — a young employee, clearly unaware. She handed him the key. I saw him slip it into his pocket and wink at the security camera.

The room grew cold, even though the fire in the fireplace burned brightly. My daughter went pale, my son-in-law lowered his eyes. Only the grandchildren remained still — perhaps seeing their parents differently for the first time.
