LIFE STORIES

I was riding the bus home after a 24-hour shift at the hospital and was literally falling asleep in my seat when the woman standing next to me suddenly began shaking me by the shoulder and demanded that I give up my seat to her. But what happened just a few minutes later left the entire bus completely silent.

That day, I had spent almost the entire day at the hospital. The shift had been so exhausting that by dawn, I could barely process what was happening around me.

Several emergencies, endless phone calls, paperwork, medications, conversations with patients and their families. I hadn’t even had time to eat properly.

When my shift finally ended, I didn’t even have the strength to change clothes. I simply threw a jacket over my medical uniform, grabbed my bag, and walked out of the hospital.

I had to wait almost twenty minutes at the bus stop. When the bus finally arrived, it was packed.

All I wanted was to get home, take a shower, and finally fall asleep.

I got on the bus and noticed only one empty seat by the window. Normally, I could easily stand for the entire ride, but that day I knew I simply wouldn’t manage.

I sat down, placed my bag on my lap, and rested my head against the window.

The last thing I remember was the moment the bus stopped at a traffic light. Then I felt someone persistently shaking me by the shoulder.

I opened my eyes, and for several seconds I didn’t even know where I was.

Standing in front of me was a woman of about sixty-five, dressed in a long coat.

— Please wake up. Give your seat to an elderly woman.

Sleepily, I looked at her and then glanced around.

The bus really was crowded. But there were several young women and men standing right beside us. I couldn’t understand why she had chosen to wake me specifically.

— I’m sorry, but perhaps you could ask someone else. I just finished a 24-hour shift at the hospital. I can barely stand on my feet.

The woman looked at my medical uniform showing beneath my unzipped jacket and smiled slightly.

— Of course. Everyone is tired these days. In our time, young people respected their elders. But now they sit, close their eyes, and pretend they don’t see anyone.

I said nothing. I didn’t even have the energy to argue. I closed my eyes again, hoping the conversation would simply end on its own.

But the woman wouldn’t stop.

— Just look at her. She’s young, she’s healthy, and she can’t even give her seat to an elderly person. This is how children are raised nowadays.

Several passengers began turning toward us. I felt extremely uncomfortable. I was so exhausted that I felt like I was about to burst into tears.

Then a young man sitting a little farther away stood up from his seat.

— Please, sit here.

It seemed that the argument would finally come to an end. But the woman didn’t even look in his direction.

— No, thank you. It’s uncomfortable for me over there.

— Why? — the man asked in surprise.

— I want to sit by the window. I’m traveling a long way.

That’s when I realized that it wasn’t simply that she didn’t want to stand. She specifically wanted my seat.

— Please stand up now — she said again. — Don’t make me ask you twice.

I was just about to stand up and say nothing, simply to put an end to the unpleasant situation, when something suddenly happened that no one on the bus expected.

A man standing nearby put his phone into his pocket and intervened.

For several minutes, he had been silently watching the entire situation.

— Just a moment — he said to the woman. — Someone has just offered you another seat.

— Nobody asked you.

— That’s true. But I’ve been listening for several minutes to the way you’re speaking to someone who has just worked twenty-four hours at a hospital.

The bus suddenly became noticeably quieter.

The woman tried to respond, but the man continued:

— My wife is a nurse. I know what a 24-hour shift looks like. Sometimes she comes home and falls asleep at the table. And this young woman hasn’t even had time to take off her uniform.

The woman frowned.

— Everyone works. Nothing extraordinary.

At that moment, the bus suddenly stopped. The driver opened the doors, but no one hurried to get off. He turned toward the passengers.

It turned out that he had been listening to the entire conversation the whole time.

— You’ve been offered a seat several times — he said loudly to the woman. — Each time, you refused. In that case, perhaps you can stand for a while.

The entire bus fell completely silent.

The woman said nothing.

Then the driver added:

— And please leave this young woman alone. I saw her get on at the stop by the hospital. She fell asleep almost immediately after she sat down.

The woman froze.

— If you really want to sit by the window, a seat on the right side will become available in two stops. But there’s no need to wake someone up and start an argument just because you happened to like her seat.

Someone among the passengers quietly laughed.

The woman said nothing more. She moved to the other end of the bus, and a few minutes later she finally sat down in the very same seat that had been offered to her earlier.

The man looked at me and said quietly:

— Please sleep. If necessary, I’ll wake you when we reach the final stop.

I thanked him and closed my eyes again.

For the first time during the entire journey, I felt at peace. Sometimes a person doesn’t need many words at all — it’s enough for someone to notice just how exhausted you are.
