A Unique House with Minimal Dimensions: The Art of Influencing Spatial Perception
One of the most extraordinary architectural structures in the world is a house designed by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. The building attracts attention with its incredible narrowness: it is only 1.3 meters wide. Despite these limited dimensions, the house reaches a length of 7 meters and a height of 16 meters.
Although the house looks like a typical residential building, it is part of an art installation that raises questions about how space affects our lives. Inside, everything necessary for living has been carefully planned: a library, a bedroom, and a bathroom. All of this fits into a very compact space.
Design as Art: The Meaning of Space
This structure is not just an unusual house but an art installation created to explore how human interaction with space reflects one’s inner state. Wurm presented his work in 2010 as part of a series of installations dedicated to examining personal boundaries and how we perceive the world around us.
What’s Inside?
Despite its narrowness, the interior layout of the house is designed to include all essential functions. Inside, visitors can see how every centimeter of space has been used efficiently. The design allows viewers to observe how, even in limited conditions, it is possible to create a comfortable living space.
The house, which became part of various exhibitions, was moved to different cities and attracted attention in places such as Venice, Sweden, and Tel Aviv. In each of these locations, it sparked reflections on the perception of space, its role in human life, and how space can be both a limitation and an opportunity.
Project Goal: Understanding the Relationship Between Space and Inner State
The main idea of this project is to encourage viewers to reflect on how our surroundings reflect our emotions and thoughts. How can spatial limitations affect a person’s inner state? How is space connected to our sense of freedom and security?
This extraordinary house is not just an architectural structure but a deeply symbolic work of art that prompts reflection on the meaning of perceiving the world around us. Through its size and concept, it encourages viewers to engage in profound contemplation about life and personal boundaries.
