My husband said he was leaving for another woman: my unexpected reaction

LIFE STORIES

I came home from work in the evening, as usual. At this time, my husband was usually already home, but today he wasn’t. The children were at his mother’s, so I decided not to rush. I calmly prepared dinner, chose to relax, and planned to go to bed early, enjoying the peace and quiet of the house.

I thought he would come back late at night as usual, but suddenly the phone rang. I looked at the screen—it was him. I picked up, and he got straight to the point without any unnecessary words: “You’ve probably noticed that I’ve been coming home late. The truth is, I have another woman. Please, don’t make a scene.

His words didn’t shock me. I replied in a calm voice, “To be honest, I didn’t expect this from you. You know very well that I have an important hairdresser appointment tomorrow, and you were supposed to take care of the kids. Why couldn’t you have told me this tomorrow?”

He fell silent, and I could hear confusion in his voice. Of course, he had expected me to scream or cry, but instead, I suggested we talk about more practical matters. “I just want to have dinner. Do you happen to know where the mayonnaise is?” I asked, feeling neither anger nor resentment.

He persisted, “Don’t you want to ask who she is? Why I left? Aren’t you worried? Don’t you want me to come back? Do you not love me anymore?”

I sighed and replied with absolute certainty, “I don’t care who she is or why you left. That’s your problem. By the way, you didn’t happen to take the mayonnaise, did you?

In response, his voice filled with astonishment: “What kind of woman are you? Your husband is leaving, and you’re asking about mayonnaise?” he said, and at that moment, I realized our conversation had come to an end.

I didn’t feel pain or disappointment. The only thing that concerned me was our children and our home. He could build his new life, and for me, his departure wasn’t a loss—it was a liberation. He left, and I stayed, maintaining my inner peace and balance.
