I thought I was showing care by agreeing to leave my home every week so my husband could spend time with his son. But after a few months, when I unexpectedly returned home, I realized that something was wrong.
I thought Scott and I had a strong relationship after six months of marriage. We had been dating for two years before the wedding, and during that time, I got to know his son, little Ben, very well. He was adorable and a bit shy, with golden hair.
At the time, it seemed to me that his mother, Patricia, treated me well. She even started talking to me and showed interest in my work as a teacher. One day, she even said, “You get along so well with Ben; it’s wonderful that he has such a positive role model.” But after the wedding, my relationship with her began to change, and a few months later, Scott surprised me.
We were cooking dinner when Scott suddenly said, “Maybe you should go visit your parents for the weekend when Ben is here?” I turned away from the stove, not understanding what he meant. “Why?” I asked.
Scott, still busy fixing something in the kitchen, sighed. “Patricia doesn’t want Ben to see you here. She says it confuses him when you’re around during his visits. He needs some peace.” I was in shock.
“But I get along great with Ben! We recently did a science experiment together, and he loved it! You saw how excited he was when we made a baking soda volcano. That was such a great idea!”
Scott, looking slightly uneasy, replied, “Yes, but Patricia thinks everything has changed since we got married, and she doesn’t want Ben to think you’re his mom.”
I was stunned. It seemed absurd.
At first glance, his proposal seemed like a compromise, so I decided not to argue. That’s how my weekends of packing my things and going to my parents’ house began. Everything seemed fine, but over time, I started to feel that this wasn’t a temporary solution at all. With each passing weekend, I felt more and more like a stranger in my own home.
Weeks went by, and I could no longer hide the truth from my parents. My mom asked me directly, “Why do you have to leave? This is your home!” She didn’t understand, and I couldn’t explain why it was happening. But I was sure it was only temporary.
However, one day, I couldn’t take it anymore and came home early. I opened the door—and in that moment, I realized that everything was even worse than I had imagined. Instead of Ben, I saw Scott sitting on the couch with Patricia. Seeing them together, I couldn’t believe my own eyes.
What is going on?” I shouted.
Scott jumped off the couch, trying to justify himself, but his words sounded less and less convincing. Patricia just smiled and said, “This was your decision, darling. We just decided to give our marriage another chance, that’s all.”
I stood there, unable to believe my own ears. At that moment, I realized that this wasn’t just a misunderstanding—it was something much deeper. When I asked Scott to explain everything, he tried to defend himself, but his explanations were empty.
In the end, I made my decision. I wasn’t going to tolerate this any longer.
Scott started packing his things. His excuses no longer mattered. It hurt, but I realized I had to start living my life again.
A week later, he called me again. He must have been worried that I hadn’t shown up at their house.
“Is everything okay? You didn’t come over, sweetheart,” he asked.
I smiled and replied:
“Everything is fine, Mom. No one will ever throw me out of my own home again.
