On the outskirts of the city, there was a small café. It didn’t strive for popularity among the fashionable crowd, but the locals appreciated it for its cozy atmosphere. Lili had been working there for three years.
On the eve of another workday, she was wiping the tables, lost in troubling thoughts about the upcoming payments. Since her mother had left, her financial situation had worsened significantly: she had to take on extra shifts, and her dream of attending university seemed increasingly distant.
— Lili, don’t get distracted! The guests will be here soon — came the voice of Zina, the older cook.
Lili hurried to the kitchen. Despite her sternness, Zina treated her warmly, sometimes offering homemade baked goods.
— I’m coming — the girl replied, adjusting her apron.
The day dragged on mercilessly. Guests came and went, and Lili diligently carried out her duties. By evening, she was already very tired from hours of standing on her feet.
Just before closing time, the café doors opened again. A man in an elegant suit entered. His confident posture immediately caught the eye. He chose a table by the window and immersed himself in his phone.
Lili approached with a notepad.
— What would you like to order? — she asked politely.
The man raised his gaze. There was a flicker of recognition in his eyes, but he quickly composed himself.
— A double espresso, please — he replied.
Lili felt a slight awkwardness, wrote down the order, and hurried to the kitchen.
When it was time to pay, she found a large banknote under the bill. Her attempt to return it was unsuccessful: the man quietly said:
— Keep it. You deserve it.
In the following days, the story repeated itself: he came, drank coffee, and left generous tips. Zina noticed this and, one day, said:
— Be careful, Lili. Sometimes hidden intentions lie behind kindness.
But the man remained reserved. No unnecessary questions, no intrusive proposals—just politeness and support.
One day, he left an amount equal to Lili’s monthly salary. She couldn’t accept such money in silence. She caught up with him at the door and asked:
— Why are you doing this?
The man introduced himself:
— My name is Anton. If you want to know more, come tomorrow. I’ll tell you everything.
The next day, they met in the small café. Anton spoke first:
— I am your father, Lili.
Her heart tightened with pain. She had grown up without a father, believing he had abandoned them forever.
— Why now? — she asked quietly.
He told her about his past: about youthful mistakes and the long search for his daughter. Lili listened in silence.
— I don’t expect forgiveness — Anton said. — I just want to be close, if you’ll allow me.
Lili left with a heavy heart. Zina supported her, reminding her that sometimes it’s worth giving someone a chance.
Several weeks later, Lili agreed to another meeting. They took a walk in the park, talking about life.
Over time, their relationship grew stronger. Anton helped Lili fulfill her dream of attending university by paying for her tuition. After a few years, she graduated with honors and began working at his company.
Some time passed. One day, standing by the window in her father’s office, Lili reflected on the journey she had taken. Beside her was a man who had once lost his way but had managed to find his way back.
