That shift in the maternity ward started like any other, but it turned out to be a real challenge.
When I entered one of the rooms, I saw a boy who looked about four years old. He was sitting on a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby girl tightly in his arms. The tiny girl was sleeping, and the boy was quietly crying. There was no mother or any adults in the room. Only silence — and a note left on the pillow.
I picked up the note and read:
“Forgive me. I can’t cope anymore. I hope someone will give them a chance at a better life.”
My heart sank. In moments like these, it’s impossible to remain indifferent. I sat down next to the boy. He looked at me anxiously and quietly asked:
— Can we stay here? I’ll take care of her. I promise.
It was one of the most touching moments of my life. In that little boy, there was so much strength, responsibility, and love for his sister that I had no doubt — they needed help as soon as possible.
Later, it turned out that their mother had found herself in a very difficult life situation. She didn’t know who to turn to and made a desperate decision. Fortunately, this story moved many people. Volunteers came forward, and social services got involved. In the end, the children were temporarily placed in the care of their aunt. And the mother received psychological support and social assistance.
Today, their story is an example of how important it is not to turn a blind eye to someone else’s suffering. How important it is to notice even the quietest cry for help.
That boy showed everyone that even the youngest can have a big heart. His love for his sister became a symbol of true care and support. Sometimes, it’s children who remind us what really matters in life — being there for those who need us.
Let this story remind each of us: kindness and help always matter. And even in the darkest moments, new hope can be born.
