The courtroom was engulfed in silence.
Everyone present — lawyers, jurors, journalists, random spectators — sat motionless, making no sound. The tension in the air was palpable.
The judge in a black robe calmly announced:
— Alex Miller, former law enforcement officer. The court hereby finds you guilty of abuse of power…
The words sounded muffled and distant. Alex stood with his head bowed and a heavy heart. His hands were tightly clenched, lips pressed into a thin line. He did not resist, did not protest, did not try to defend himself. The only thing he wanted was to say his final “goodbye.”
— Your Honor — he finally whispered — I have no family or close ones. But I had a faithful friend. Please, allow me to say goodbye to him… With my dog, Rex.
A quiet murmur passed through the courtroom. This was not a plea for mercy. It was… humane.
The judge looked at the prosecutor. He slowly nodded.

A few minutes later, the door opened. A German Shepherd confidently entered the courtroom. His name was Rex.
The dog moved calmly, as if understanding the special nature of the place. His eyes were very expressive — not aggressive, not scared, but wise. He immediately recognized Alex. With a deep sigh, he rushed toward him.
Alex knelt down. He embraced the dog, held him tightly, and petted his head. Tears appeared in his eyes:
— I’m sorry, Rex… I let you down. I didn’t defend either myself or you. But you were always by my side… Even when others turned away.
It was a touching scene. Even some jurors had trembling chins. But at that very moment, something unexpected happened…
Rex suddenly lifted his head and, without looking back, walked away from Alex. He headed straight to the man standing by the far wall — another police officer. That was Oliver — Alex’s former partner, the man whose testimony played a key role in the case.

Rex came close and suddenly growled. Not loudly, but firmly. He began nudging the pocket of Oliver’s uniform with his nose.
Everyone froze. Even the judge leaned forward slightly.
— What’s happening?.. — he asked quietly.
Oliver looked embarrassed and tried to step back, but the court officer approached him and politely asked him to stop. He pulled a small USB drive from the pocket.
The judge frowned:
— Please connect it to the computer.
A few seconds later, videos appeared on the screen. They showed someone counting money, copying documents, discussing suspicious activities. One of the voices on the recording was all too familiar to Alex…

But suddenly everyone heard:
— Calm down. We’ll pin everything on Miller. He stays silent. Always silent.
Silence fell. The judge looked at the prosecutor, who looked at the security.
— The session is adjourned. The new evidence must be analyzed. Mr. Miller, you are temporarily released from the verdict. And please reward the dog with something tasty.
Restrained applause echoed through the courtroom. It wasn’t a victory, but a relief. Justice hadn’t triumphed yet, but hope had appeared.
Alex was still kneeling, stunned and shaken. Rex approached him again and pressed his muzzle against his cheek.
— You saved me, as always — Alex whispered. — You always knew who to trust…
