I climbed up the ladder to trim the branches of the old apple tree when suddenly my dog grabbed the leg of my trousers with his teeth and pulled me down sharply. In that moment, I began to understand the reason for his strange behavior — and my heart froze.
I remember that day in the smallest details. The morning sky was heavy, covered with dark, rainy clouds; the air stood still, as if expecting misfortune. A light dampness clung to my skin, and the wind seemed ready to gust, but for now, it only lazily moved the leaves. Despite this, I decided not to postpone the matter: the dry branches of the old apple tree threatened to break and had to be removed. The ladder was already prepared, the tools lay at hand, and gathering my thoughts, I began to climb upward.
I had only gone a few steps when I felt a sudden tug from behind. I turned around and froze in surprise and fear.
My dog was climbing after me. His paws slid on the metal ladder, his claws scratched the rungs, and his eyes were fixed straight on me — full of anxiety and determination.
— What are you doing? — I shouted, trying to chase him away. — Stay down!
I tried to push him away with my hand, but again he stood up on his hind legs, rested his front paws on the rungs, and suddenly grabbed the fabric of my trousers, trying to pull me down. I barely kept my balance, and my heart was pounding faster.
— Hey! Have you gone mad? — I cried. — Let go!

But the dog did not give up. Stubbornly clinging to the fabric, he pulled harder, as if warning me about something important. Irritation mixed with a strange feeling of unease that spread through my whole body.
“Why is he acting like this? — I thought. — Is it just a game?”
But his gaze carried something more — something urgent and significant. It looked as if he wanted to say: “Don’t go up, it’s dangerous.”
I pushed him away again and raised my voice:
— Go! Stop! Let me work!
But when I stepped higher, his jaws once again grabbed my trousers, tugging downward with such force that I nearly lost my balance. A moment of silence pierced me with anxiety: if this happened again, I could seriously injure myself.
I froze, breathing heavily, and my heart tightened. A thought flashed through my mind: I had to make a decision. I climbed down, walked over to the dog, and said sternly:

— Fine. Since you’re so smart, go on the chain.
He lowered his head, as if regretful, but obediently ran to his kennel. I fastened the chain, feeling a mix of relief and gratitude. Now it seemed I could work in peace.
I returned to the ladder, grabbed it again, and was ready to climb up when suddenly something unexpected happened.
Lightning lit up the sky, tearing the darkness with a bright flash. Thunder followed immediately after, ripping through the air. The lightning struck straight into the apple tree, right where I had planned to go. The bark exploded, scattering sparks, and smoke rose into the air. I jumped back, covering my face with my hands, trembling.
For a long time I stood motionless, unable to catch my breath. Then it struck me: if not for my stubborn dog, I would have been on that ladder, high among the branches, when the lightning hit. The thought sent a cold shiver through me.

I turned to him. He was standing by the kennel, the chain was tight, and his gaze — hard and deep, filled with something beyond words.
— My God — I whispered, trembling. — You saved me.
I sat down beside him and hugged his neck. He wagged his tail, as if saying: “I knew what I was doing.” My heart filled with warmth and gratitude.
At that moment, I understood an important truth: sometimes our animals feel and understand things that the human mind cannot grasp. They see danger, foresee threats, and are ready to act for us. And for that loyalty, for such care, I will be grateful to him for all my life.
I stood by him for a long time, listening to the sound of the wind and the storm, feeling how fear slowly gave way to wonder and excitement. Every sound, every gust of wind now seemed to have a new meaning: sometimes salvation comes from where we least expect it — from the heart and instincts of those who love us unconditionally.
