Every day, a 70-year-old retiree would go to the butcher’s she knew well and buy exactly 40 kilograms of meat. The young butcher, Alexei, grew more and more astonished with each passing day. At first, he thought the woman must be feeding a large family, but week after week, the same situation repeated itself.
The woman was small, hunched, wearing an old coat, with a worn wheeled bag. She hardly spoke, quietly handing over the money, carefully arranging it, taking her bags, and leaving. She carried a strange, unusual scent – a mix of spices, fresh meat, and something Alexei couldn’t immediately identify.
Rumors quickly spread through the market: some whispered she was feeding an animal shelter, some said she was preparing food for the poor, while others proposed even more unbelievable theories. Alexei didn’t believe the gossip, but his curiosity grew every day.
One evening, he decided to follow her. She walked slowly but steadily, dragging her heavy bag through snow-covered streets, past deserted suburbs, and by abandoned buildings. Eventually, she stopped at an old factory that had been abandoned for ten years. Alexei froze. The woman went inside and disappeared from view.
Twenty minutes later, she emerged – already without the bags. The next day, the situation repeated, and on the third day, Alexei could no longer contain himself. He waited for the woman to go inside and quietly followed her.
Inside, there was an unusual but not sharp smell – a mixture of spices, fresh meat, and something warm and alive. Alexei listened: there were quiet sounds, almost like purring and soft growling. Peeking through the half-closed door, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Before him stretched an incredible sight: the room turned out to be a true mini-animal shelter. There were several lions and other exotic animals, each in a spacious, secure cage. The elderly woman carefully distributed the meat, making sure each one got a portion, and spoke softly to them:
— Calm down, my darlings… soon you will have a delicious meal… everything will be fine…
Alexei froze, astonished and at the same time moved. The woman noticed his gaze and smiled, gently nodding:
— Do you want to come in? — she asked softly. — Don’t be afraid, no one here hurts anyone.
He stepped in carefully and saw the care and love with which she tended each animal. It turned out the woman was a former zoologist. When the local zoo closed, she took in those left without a home. She created a safe place for the animals, rescuing them and caring for each with heart.
Alexei couldn’t contain his amazement: “How could someone work alone for so many years, and in secret?” he thought. The woman explained that many people don’t understand how difficult it is to care for such animals, and she prefers to do good quietly, without noise or publicity.
That day, Alexei left with a completely different feeling. He realized that behind apparent modesty lies enormous strength, dedication, and care. Soon he began helping himself: bringing supplies, helping clean cages, and observing the animals.
The story of the little woman with the worn bag became a story of kindness, care, and love for those who cannot care for themselves.
