The girl was late for the job interview, but she helped an elderly man — and it turned out that he was the owner of the company.

LIFE STORIES

Marta walked through the busy city streets, feeling every step bringing her closer to the opportunity she had dreamed of for months. This job could change her life — pull her out of constant small, temporary jobs, give her a sense of security, and the knowledge that her efforts truly mattered.

At the intersection, she heard a sudden scream and the sound of a body falling. On the other side of the road, an elderly man unexpectedly collapsed, clutching his chest. Pedestrians swirled around him and cars roared by, but almost no one stopped. It seemed the world preferred to look away from someone’s misfortune.

“No, it can’t be…” Marta whispered, feeling her heart tighten with fear. Her mind screamed: “You’ll be late! Run!” but something inside her told her to stop. She crossed the street and knelt beside the man.

“Are you okay?” she asked, trying to speak calmly, though her hands were shaking.

The man breathed heavily, his eyes half-closed. He barely pointed to his pocket:

“Pills… in the wallet…”

Marta quickly found the wallet and pulled out a small bottle of pills. Carefully, she took one out and helped the man swallow it, whispering at the same time:

“Breathe slowly… Everything will be okay.”

Minutes stretched like hours. Marta’s heart raced wildly, and her gaze wandered between the man, the cars, and the passersby. Gradually, the man’s breathing normalized, and the color returned to his face. He opened his eyes and looked at Marta with such gratitude that it warmed her heart.

“You saved my life…” he said quietly. “How can I ever repay you?”

Marta smiled, but at that moment, a terrifying realization hit her: “I’m late for the interview… The opportunity is gone. But the most important thing is that he’s safe…” Her heart tightened with disappointment, yet she still ran to the subway, feeling a mix of anxiety and relief.

But her mind whispered: “You did the right thing. And that counts too.” She decided to enter the office — even if everything was already lost, at least to see that she had done everything she could.

At the reception, a smiling young secretary greeted her:

“Sorry, the management is running late. Please have a seat and wait a moment.”

Marta sat down, holding her bag. Her heart was still racing, but the inner tension gradually eased. She watched the people around her, the city living its usual rhythm, and thought: “Sometimes the true test of character comes at the least expected moment.”

About half an hour passed. The door opened, and the same elderly man entered the office. Now he looked completely different: neatly dressed, confidently leaning on a cane, his face radiating calm and strength.

“Good morning,” he said, smiling. “I am the owner of the company. Sorry for being late — there was an extremely important case.”

He turned to Marta, his gaze full of respect:

“And here she is,” he continued, “the one who was not afraid to stop when everyone else walked by. The one who understands what true responsibility, courage, and humanity mean. Marta, we would like you to start working with us as soon as possible. You’ve already proven that you deserve it.”

The words stuck in Marta’s throat. Tears of joy and relief welled up in her eyes. She had saved a man… and, as it turned out, she had saved herself as well.

That day, she realized that the true value of a person is not measured by how quickly they reach their goal, but by how willing they are to help others. Courage and kindness can change the life not only of those we help, but also our own.

When Marta left the office, the city seemed different. The street hustle, the car noise, and the rushing pedestrians no longer felt like chaos — they reminded her that every person faces a choice: to walk past or to stop. And it is these moments, full of responsibility and humanity, that give life its true meaning.

Marta smiled. She understood: life rewards those who are not afraid to show courage and compassion. That day, she gained not only her dream job, but also realized that true human strength lies in the heart.
