Right after the wedding, while the guests waited for the traditional moment, Anna lifted her arms, expecting that her new husband, Lukas, would pick her up in his arms, as was the custom in their family. That small ritual seemed to her like a symbol of their beginning — a warm, beautiful memory meant to stay with them forever.
But Lukas, to everyone’s surprise, suddenly turned to his mother, Eleonora, smiling as if it were the most natural gesture in the world. He carefully lifted her in his arms. Eleonora laughed, hugged her son, and the guests froze in astonishment. Photographers captured every moment, and Lukas seemed very pleased with himself.
Anna froze, her smile vanished, and a hollow feeling filled her chest. She felt unnecessary at her own wedding. The guests exchanged looks, quietly sighing — no one expected such a turn of events.
“Lukas… what are you doing?” Anna whispered with a trembling voice. “This is our day.”
“My mom is the most important person to me,” Lukas replied calmly. “I wanted to make her happy.”
The words sounded cold. Anna realized that her feelings, her joy, and her expectations of this moment meant nothing to him. He didn’t try to understand how deeply this gesture hurt her, nor did he think about how it looked to others.
She took a deep breath, walked a few steps forward, and said calmly:
“If you think I should accept being treated like this… you’re wrong.”

She took off her wedding ring and let it fall quietly onto the grass. The hall fell silent, broken only by the soft rustling of her dress. The guests were stunned; some covered their mouths with their hands, realizing they were witnessing a turning point.
“What are you doing?!” Lukas shouted, confused, trying to set his mother down. “This is our day!”
“I’m drawing conclusions,” Anna replied calmly, though inside her heart was burning. “If on the very first day of our marriage I’m already in second place, it will only get worse.”
She turned and walked away without looking back. The guests stepped aside to let her pass. A silence lingered in the air, full of understanding of what had just occurred.
Eleonora was finally placed on the ground. She tried to smile, but she saw the astonishment and slight uncertainty in her son’s eyes. Lukas wanted to run after Anna, but several guests stood before him, shaking their heads:
“You ruined this day yourself,” said one of the bride’s friends.
“You can’t treat a wife like that,” added another, her voice heavy with meaning.
Anna walked the path toward the car, feeling a growing clarity inside her. She understood the most important thing: it’s better to stop now than spend years with a man who cannot put his family first and does not respect her feelings.
Ahead of her was freedom — the chance to build her life on her own terms, surrounded by people who value her, support her, and love her sincerely. She looked at the bright sky, took a deep breath, and felt — before her truly were new beginnings, full of warmth, respect, and the happiness she deserves.
