LIFE STORIES

On Christmas, I saw an elderly couple on the highway and helped them change a flat tire, thinking I was just doing an ordinary good deed 😲

A week later my parents called me in a panic and shouted for me to turn on the news immediately — what I saw on the screen left me in complete shock 😱😨

On Christmas, I was driving home on the highway. The weather was harsh: wet snow, sharp wind, gray sky that made the road seem endless. Cars rushed past, splashing mud, headlights blurred into streaks.

On the back seat, a child was dozing, wrapped in a jacket. Inside the car, it was quiet, only the sound of the tires and the heater running.

And suddenly, I saw them.

On the shoulder stood an old car. The hazard lights flickered unevenly, as if about to go out. Next to it — an elderly couple. The man struggled unsuccessfully with a wheel, the woman stood a little aside, clutching her bag. The tire was completely flat.

I drove past… and immediately braked.

I don’t know why. I just couldn’t leave.

I turned on my hazard lights and stopped in front. I got out of the car — the wind hit my face immediately, cold piercing to the bone. The road was slippery and wet, mud squelched under my feet.

The elderly people looked confused and frightened. It was clear they didn’t know what to do or what to hope for.

I grabbed the jack and the lug wrench. My hands froze quickly, fingers refused to cooperate. Lifting the car took a long time — the jack kept slipping. The wheel seemed stuck: the nuts wouldn’t budge. I pushed with all my strength until my shoulders and back ached.

Cars sped by just a few meters away, the wind howled, wet snow stuck to my face. Several times I caught myself thinking it was foolish and dangerous, but I kept going.

The child peeked out of the car; I waved for him to stay inside. He obediently sat back down, pressing his hand against the glass.

When the tire was finally replaced, I straightened up with difficulty. My jacket was soaked, jeans wet, hair sticking to my face.

The elderly couple kept thanking me over and over. The woman was crying, the man tried to slip money into my hand. I refused. I just said I was in a hurry to go home and drove off.

On the way, I thought it was just an ordinary good deed. Nothing more. Just helping on the highway during the holiday.

I had no idea what it would mean for me.

Ten days passed.

In the evening, a call came from my parents. They were shouting into the phone, talking over each other, demanding I turn on the TV immediately.

I did.

And at that moment, I truly felt sick. Because on the news… 😱😲 Continued in the first comment 👇👇

My own face was staring back at me from the screen.

The news showed footage from another car’s dashcam. Me — on the shoulder of the highway, next to the old car, holding a jack. The caption under the video said that this woman was wanted.

The anchor said I was a scammer who tricks elderly people and steals their money. Everyone was warned to be careful and report to the police immediately if they saw me.

It turned out that the elderly couple had lost a huge sum of money — money they had borrowed from their son. When he found out it was missing, he got angry. And they couldn’t think of anything better than to claim they were robbed on the highway.

And I became the scapegoat.
