Every night, my husband secretly went to his mother’s room and stayed there until morning, while he kept lying to me. One night, I couldn’t take it anymore and quietly followed him… and what I saw that night completely destroyed my life 😳
When I married Daniel, I thought I had finally met the man I could peacefully spend the rest of my life with. He was never loud or overly emotional, but whenever I was beside him, I always felt a sense of calm inside, as if all my worries simply disappeared on their own. After the wedding, we moved into an old house where his mother, Margaret, had already been living since her husband’s death. The house was small and old, with wooden floors that creaked at night, and back then I even liked how everything felt so warm, homely, and family-oriented.
The first few weeks passed peacefully. Margaret seemed like a quiet and kind woman.
But one night, I woke up and noticed that Daniel was not beside me.
At first, I didn’t think much of it. I assumed he had gone to the kitchen or simply couldn’t sleep. But when almost twenty minutes had passed, I left the bedroom and saw light coming from underneath the door of Margaret’s room. I stood in the hallway for a few seconds, then went back, trying not to think about anything bad.
The next night, it happened again.
And then again.

After a few weeks, I already knew exactly what time he would carefully get out of bed. He moved very quietly, as if he were afraid of waking me, and every time he went down the same hallway.
I tried to convince myself that everything was fine, but inside me, a feeling was slowly growing that I could no longer control. I was beginning to feel hurt.
When I finally asked my husband directly, he remained silent for a long time and then quietly said:
— Mom is afraid to stay alone at night after Dad’s death. I just sit beside her until she falls asleep.
He said it calmly, without irritation, and somehow that made everything even harder. Because it was almost impossible to argue with an explanation like that.
But the months passed. And nothing changed.
Every night, he went to her room while I stayed alone in our bedroom, staring at the ceiling and trying not to think about how my own husband seemed to be living some completely different life.
Over time, I began to notice strange things. Margaret barely spoke to me, rarely left her room, and always looked tense, especially in the evenings.
But one night, everything changed.
I woke up again when Daniel carefully got out of bed. This time, it felt as though something inside me had finally snapped. I could no longer lie there and pretend that this wasn’t destroying me.
I waited until he stepped into the hallway and then followed him barefoot, trying not to make a sound. My heart was pounding so hard that I felt he would hear me before I even reached the door.
The door to Margaret’s room was slightly open. Warm light spilled from inside. I slowly peeked in, and at that moment, I felt everything inside me turn upside down. What I saw inside that room, and what everyone had been lying to me about all those months, completely destroyed my life 😱 I told the continuation of my story in the first comment 👇👇
Margaret was sitting on the bed and crying.
Not quietly and calmly, the way adults usually cry. She was crying as if she were a frightened little child. Her hands were trembling, her eyes were filled with terror, and Daniel was kneeling in front of her, trying to calm her down.
And then, for the first time, I heard something I had never known before.
— Please, don’t leave me alone… He was standing by the window again… I saw the blood again…

Daniel slowly took her hands and said quietly:
— Mom, it was just a dream. You’re home. It’s all over.
Then I noticed an entire stack of medications on the bedside table, along with photographs of a young man in a military uniform.
Later that night, Daniel finally told me the truth he had been hiding from me all these years.
It turned out that his father had not died peacefully, as I had previously been told. Many years ago, he took his own life in this very house after suffering a severe post-traumatic stress disorder episode. Margaret found him herself, and after that, her mental health never fully recovered. At night, she would suffer intense panic attacks, see her husband standing by the window, hear his voice, and be terrified of staying alone until dawn.
Daniel had hidden this even from me because Margaret had begged him not to tell anyone. She was ashamed of her condition and afraid that I would leave if I learned the truth.
And at that moment, I realized that I wasn’t frightened because my husband had been going to his mother.
Something else completely broke me.
All those months, I had been lying in our bedroom, jealous of a man who every night was simply trying to keep his own mother from losing her mind.
