That day, the emergency department was unusually quiet. Outside, heavy rain was pouring down so hard that the street was almost impossible to see. Water streamed down the windows in continuous sheets, while the automatic doors kept opening and closing to let in the few visitors who were soaked to the skin. The nurses chatted wearily among themselves; some were filling out paperwork, while others were checking patient lists. It felt as though the shift would never end.

The security guard standing at the entrance immediately rushed forward.

But the dog didn’t back away even a single step. It stood right in front of the reception desk, breathing heavily and barking loudly, as if trying to say something. Whenever someone got too close, it simply stepped aside without running away. Its eyes were tense, almost desperate.
The nurses kept trying to chase it away, and someone was already about to call for assistance, but the dog continued barking over and over again, never taking its eyes off the people.

The nurse wasn’t looking at the dog… she was looking at the black bag on its back.
At first, she thought the bag was moving oddly. Very slightly, almost imperceptibly. She narrowed her eyes, took a step closer, and suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.
— Wait… — she said quietly, raising her hand. — Don’t touch it.
Everyone turned to look at her.
She slowly approached the dog. The dog immediately stopped barking, as if it understood that someone had finally heard its message. It stood calmly, breathing heavily, allowing her to come closer.
With trembling hands, the nurse carefully pulled back the edge of the bag. At that very moment, a frightened scream echoed through the room.
Inside was a child.
The child was tiny, pale, and barely breathing. Wrapped in rain-soaked fabric, the little one hardly moved.
— Get a stretcher, now! — the nurse shouted, no longer able to keep her voice steady.
Everyone sprang into action. Panic instantly gave way to swift, coordinated movements. The child was carefully lifted out of the bag and rushed deeper into the hospital. Doctors hurried over and began examining the child while others prepared the necessary medical equipment.
The dog remained where it was. It no longer barked. It simply watched as the child was taken away, as if making sure the little one would truly be saved.
Later, it was discovered that there had been a traffic accident on a nearby road. Because of the heavy rain, the car was almost invisible and had remained unnoticed off to the side. The parents were unconscious, and the child had been left in grave danger.
Only the dog reacted first.
It got out of the vehicle, pulled the child free, secured the child inside the bag, and despite the pouring rain and darkness, made its way to the nearest hospital.
The child was saved.
Some time later, the parents were found as well. They, too, were taken to the hospital in time.
