On the plane, a man put his leg on my seat — I asked him several times to move it, and then I taught him a lesson he would remember for a long time.

LIFE STORIES

I was flying to visit my sister, whom I hadn’t seen in almost two years.

For nearly two years, we had stayed in touch mostly through a screen: short messages in the mornings, phone calls in the evenings, photos of the children, updates from work, and memories of how we used to sit together for hours and talk about everything.

And now, finally, I was flying to see her.

Only a few hours remained until we would meet.

I was happy.

That’s why, at first, I didn’t even pay attention to the strange smell.

It appeared shortly after takeoff — sharp, heavy, and unpleasant.

I thought someone had opened some food.

But after a while, the smell became so intense that I instinctively turned toward the window.

Only then did I see where it was coming from.

A bare male foot was resting on the edge of my armrest.

I slowly turned my head.

The man sitting behind me was watching a movie and calmly had his leg stretched between the seats.

For several seconds, I couldn’t believe he actually thought this was normal.

— Excuse me — I said. — Could you move your leg?

He looked at me.

— What?

— Your foot is on my armrest.

He looked down and lazily shrugged.

— I’m comfortable.

— I’m not.

— Then don’t pay attention to it.

I decided not to make a scene.

I asked him again.

He moved his leg.

For a few minutes.

Then he stretched it out again.

This time I said nothing.

I simply looked at him.

He noticed my stare and gave me a mocking smile.

There was something unpleasant in his expression — as if he was deliberately waiting for my reaction.

I turned my head away.

But one thought appeared in my mind.

Not an angry one.

Just a very simple one.

If a person only understands consequences, then consequences are exactly what they will get.

I pressed the flight attendant call button.

She came over, and I calmly explained the situation.

The flight attendant asked the passenger to maintain an appropriate distance and not occupy my space.

The man reluctantly moved his leg.

— Fine — he muttered. — Happy now?

I didn’t answer.

At that moment, I decided I wasn’t going to argue with him anymore.

I asked the flight attendant for a coffee.

A few minutes later, she placed a small cup in front of me.

I took a sip.

I put it on the tray table.

And I began to wait.

The man started extending his leg again.

First slowly.

Then even farther.

His foot once again ended up exactly where it absolutely shouldn’t have been.

He looked at me.

I looked at him.

And for the first time during the entire flight, I smiled.

He apparently didn’t understand why.

I picked up the cup of coffee, leaned back, and said calmly:

— Are you sure you want to continue?

— Yes.

He even laughed.

Then I did something he absolutely did not expect.

His foot touched the cup of coffee, and the coffee spilled onto his leg.

It wasn’t boiling hot. It was simply hot enough for him to feel it immediately and jerk his leg back.

He jumped out of his seat.

— What are you doing?!

Several people turned their heads.

I calmly looked at him.

— Is it uncomfortable for you now?

He stared at me with an expression as if, for the first time during the entire flight, he didn’t know what to say.

— You did that on purpose!

— Your leg knocked over the coffee.

Silence fell over the cabin.

I didn’t start making excuses.

— I asked you three times to stop. You decided that you didn’t care about my discomfort. So I decided to show you what it feels like when someone deliberately does something unpleasant to another person.

He opened his mouth, but said nothing.

The flight attendant approached almost immediately.

I expected her to start reprimanding me.

But instead, she first looked at the man, then at his leg, and calmly asked:

— Do you need a napkin?

He didn’t answer.

The woman sitting by the aisle quietly said:

— I think he understands now.

Someone from the row beside us snickered.

But I had no intention of gloating.

I simply turned toward the window.

A few minutes later, the man sat back down.

This time, he kept both legs exactly where they belonged.

He didn’t say another word.

I finished my coffee and, for the first time during the entire flight, felt relieved.

Yes, I could have simply called the crew.

I could have argued with him.

I could have made a scene.

But sometimes simply hearing a request isn’t enough for a person.

Sometimes they have to experience firsthand what they were doing to someone else without giving it a second thought.

When we landed, I almost immediately forgot about the whole incident.

Because my sister was waiting for me at the airport.

Nearly two years of separation ended with a single hug.

As we walked toward the exit together, I suddenly thought about that man.

I didn’t want to get revenge on him.

I only wanted him to finally understand one simple thing:

one person’s comfort should never become a problem for everyone else.

And judging by the way he sat completely still for the rest of the flight, I think he did remember his lesson after all.
